This film shows the huge blizzards on the South Durham & Lancashire Union Railway running through Stainmore in the winter of 1947. The closed line is being cleared by gangs of men with shovels, snow ploughs and rail-mounted Rolls Royce Derwent jet engines blasting the snow. It also shows severe flooding on the railway at Barlby near Selby.

Includes interviews with trades union officials and a worker as a large campaign is mounted to save the works. It ended on 29 June, 1984 with closure and the loss of 1,750 jobs. The edition was first broadcast on 24 January 1983.

Influenced by the acclaimed radio series The Radio Ballads, this is a portrait of the last days of steam haulage and the progress to diesel and electric trains. The North Road works closed in 1965, a victim of the Beeching axe, with the loss of 2,150 jobs.
