Made by CHAS. R.H. Pickard & Son of Leeds, this film documents the royal visit and opening of the Civic Hall by King George V on 23rd August, 1933.
This film was produced by members of Leeds Camera Club as a document of the Coronation Celebrations held in Leeds in 1953. The city was covered in colourful and ornate decorations for the celebration, and included in the film is extensive footage of Leeds city centre during this celebration time.
In 1933 King George and Queen Mary visited Leeds to open the new Civic Hall, and while on their trip also stated at Harewood House. The royal procession travelled from Oakwood to the Town Hall, where the King inspected the guard of honour in Victoria Square. After a short ceremony in the Victoria Hall, the Royal party went on to the Civic Hall for the opening ceremony. Record numbers of people from all over Yorkshire turned out for the event. This film captures part of that procession from a spectator's point of view.
In 1935 the city of Bradford organized many events to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of George V. Events included historical re-enactments in Peel Park as well as processions through the city and evening bonfire celebrations.
