North East on Film

Supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund North East on Film connects the people and communities of the North East with their regional film heritage.

Ever since the early pioneers of moving image captured their first frames, filmmakers have documented the places where we lived, worked, and played – recording on film all the important milestones in our lives. These films reflect the communities, industries, changing landscapes, modes of transport, food and fashion, telling the collective stories of people, places, cultures and identities.

Throughout the North East on Film project, we will uncover new films to preserve and reveal, enabling the people of our region to see, enjoy and even contribute to the onscreen story of over 100 years of life in the North East of England.

During the project, our team will be criss-crossing the North East, teaming up with cinemas, community centres, local interest groups, and festival organisers to screen these astonishing images in the places where they were first made.  Keep an eye on our website, Facebook and Twitter pages for details of events near you.

We're also asking for your help to find the hidden films of the North East via our new Search & Rescue campaign, which seeks to discover the film treasures that may be tucked away unseen in the cupboards and garden sheds of the region.

Throughout the coming months, we'll also be making sure that new material and collections are available to watch right here on our website, plus we're working with the region's media to reveal our CineSecrets: hidden historical gems from across the North East specially curated as part of the project.

To bring this project to life we’ve recruited new specialist staff and we’re creating new volunteer opportunities to offer training and understanding in assessing, cataloguing, caring for films and developing audiences for this amazing material.
