CELEBRATIONS 1945 Visitor TabsDescription This amateur film made by a Wakefield-based businessman shows short scenes of the VE Day celebrations which took place in Wakefield city centre at the end of the Second World War. The film includes military and civilians celebrating as well as a huge bonfire at the end of the night. Title - Victory Celebrations after the 1939-1945 War. The film opens with long shots of parades including soldiers, Wrens and members of the Home Guard. The streets are filled with crowds of people, and the streets and buildings have been decorated with bunting. The following scenes show a victory dance which is held in the streets of the city centre at dusk. A huge crowd is still gathered, and there are spotlights which have been set up for the dance in order to light the streets. The film ends with scenes of a huge bonfire which lights the town. The light from the fire gives just enough of a glow to see the crowds that have gathered all around the area, and the Griffin Hotel can be seen in the background.
