Tyne Tees Television interview with Chief Executive Sir John Hunter of Swan Hunter and Tyne Shipbuilders and film inserts on a shipyard strike at Swan Hunters, Newcastle upon Tyne, including aerial footage of shipyards and of a strike meeting. This news footage was included in a Look of the Month compilation, originally broadcast on 28 October 1968.

Striking shipyard workers in Newcastle are gathered together to hear trades union speeches urging them to fight shipyard owners who are in a world of their own. The strike took place following the company’s merger with the Vickers Armstrong Naval Yard at High Walker and the Hebburn Yard of Hawthorn Leslie that year.

Interview with Chief Executive Sir John Hunter of Swan Hunter and Tyne Shipbuilders during the strike who states that the men will be re-employed at the earliest possible moment. He hopes that he will be able to build up the number of men and employ additional workers.

Note: The strike followed the government’s recommendation in the Geddes Report for the rationalisation of British shipbuilding.
