Description

This is a film showing two Army Challenge Cup Rugby Union Finals, both between the 1st Battalion Duke of Wellington’s Regiment and the 1st Battalion King’s Own Scottish Borders Regiment.  The first one, in 1960, is played in Berlin.  There is also a hospital’s rugby final at Richmond between London Hospital and St Thomas’s.  The match was attended by Prince Philip.

Title – A.K.C. Sports Special Army Rugby Final

Major General Canvil (?) meets the teams before kick-off at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium.  The 1st Battalion Kings own Scottish Borders are playing in dark shirts against 1st Battalion Duke of Wellington. The Borders win 9-0, showing some of the action and brief shots of the crowd. The cup is presented and the winning team poses for photos.

Intertitle – Riotous Rugger

The two teams, London Hospitals and St Thomas’s, line up for the hospitals rugby final at Richmond, and presented to Prince Philip. Following this is a battle between staff of the two hospitals using flour bombs and other similar objects on a muddy field before returning to the rugby match, which is won by St Thomas’s 8-0.

Intertitle – Army Challenge Cup

The Duchess of Gloucester takes her seat in the stand to watch as the two teams line up: 1st Battalion Duke of Wellington v Scottish Borders.  Some of the action is filmed, as are sections of the crowd.   The winners, Scottish Borders, receive the cup, having won 6-3.
