Description

Amateur film of a visit to Ambleside, Cumbria, and a walk around Lake Windermere, which may have been shot in the late 1940s or early 1950s. This film is part of the Newcastle & District Amateur Cinematographers Association (ACA) collection.

The film opens with various general views of the town of Ambleside, Cumbria, which include hikers with rucksacks strolling on the street, a group of old men at the market cross, mountains behind the town. There are shots of some sheep and a cat strolling along a stone wall in the sunshine. There’s a local mill and a close-up of the mill wheel. General view of the Bridge House. A woman looks over the wall at Stock Beck. The film then focuses on the bridge arch stonework. A little boy walks towards camera with his younger sister. Soldiers in uniform are standing in a group on one of Ambleside’s steep lanes. Close-up of the stone arch over a cottage door. Another shot focuses on an old gas street lamp on the street opposite a warehouse. A woman walks up a lane towards camera.

General views of the mountains seen across a tiled roof, Lake Windermere and more mountain scenery. The same young woman looks out over the picturesque Lake District landscape, then climbs up a hillside with a walking stick. She waves her handkerchief down at a group of older men and women in her holiday group, slowly climbing the hill. The young woman continues through fields and along a path through woods.

A man bikes along a country road, a large house with smoking chimneys located opposite. There are various shots of the house and lakeside view. A young woman walks over a bridge. A man is painting at an easel in a woodland clearing.

Travelling shot along a Lake District road. Family and friends take a break from their Lake District hike. A woman lays out a picnic. A group of families are gathered for the picnic, some enjoying a cigarette. A woman in a checked swing jacket powders her face. A young man downs a bottled drink quickly. Another man is putting on his sock. Another young woman climbs a tree, a pet dog waiting for her at the base of the trunk.

A local man points the hikers in the right direction on their walk.

A pleasure boat sails by on the lake. Various shots record the family groups hiking around the lake. A man is carrying a log along one of the paths. A sunset view over Lake Windermere closes the film.
